Why Your Glass Still Looks Streaky (And How to Actually Fix It)

You spray, you wipe, and the glass looks clean for a second — then the light hits it and there they are: faint streaks, smears, sometimes a hazy film that wasn't there before you "cleaned" it. This is one of the most common cleaning frustrations, and it's rarely actually the cleaner's fault.

Why streaks happen in the first place

Streaks are usually leftover residue — either from the cleaning product itself if too much is used, or more often from whatever cloth is doing the wiping. A cloth that's already carrying lint, dust, or a bit of old detergent will redistribute that residue across the glass instead of lifting it away cleanly.

The cloth matters more than the cleaner

This is the single biggest factor most people overlook. Paper towels and regular cotton cloths often leave behind lint or fibres, which shows up as streaking once the glass dries. A clean, lint-free microfibre cloth — used dry for the final pass — makes a bigger visible difference than switching cleaning products entirely.

Technique: the S-pattern wipe

Spraying evenly and then wiping in a consistent S-pattern, rather than circular scrubbing, helps avoid overlapping wet patches that dry unevenly and leave faint marks. Work from top to bottom so any drips get caught by your next pass rather than drying in place.

A streak-free finish is less about a stronger spray and more about a cleaner cloth and a calmer, more deliberate wipe.

Weather and timing actually matter

Cleaning glass in direct, harsh sunlight is a common mistake — the cleaner dries too fast to be wiped away evenly, leaving streaks almost guaranteed. Early morning, evening, or an overcast day gives the solution enough time to be wiped off properly before it dries on its own.

Don't overspray

More product doesn't mean a better clean here either. A light, even mist across the surface is enough — soaking the glass just means more liquid to wipe away, and more opportunity for it to dry unevenly before your cloth gets there.

Put together — a light spray, a genuinely clean microfibre cloth, an S-pattern wipe, and cleaning out of direct sunlight — most streaking issues disappear without needing to change anything about the cleaner itself.
